Prior to the 2014 season, Baseball America ranked him as the best prospect in baseball. He was in spring training with the Twins and was sent back to Fort Myers to start the season, despite expectations that he might be in the majors before the All-Star break.
Even more shocking, he appeared to lose his hitting swing there, hitting only.240 in 30 games while missing a lot of time due to injury.
On August 11th, the Twins advanced him to AA, assigning him to the Eastern League’s New Britain Rock Cats, following a number of outstanding outings in early August.
When he collided with right fielder Mike Kvasnicka in the fifth inning of his first game for his new team, he sustained a concussion and had to be transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Following the startling impact, he was knocked out for ten minutes. Despite the fact that he had no fractures, the Twins decided to be safe and said Buxton would not return that season.
After his 2014 season was cut short, Buxton proceeded to the Arizona Fall League, but the injury bug followed him there. While diving to catch a sinking line drive on October 27th, he shattered a finger on his right hand.
