Bates started his football career at Nyssa High School in Oregon, where he played his first two years before moving to Lebanon High School. He was a multi-sport athlete who also competed in basketball and track.
In his two years at Nyssa High, Bates was selected for The Oregonian’s second-team all-state. He also played as a utility player, earning All-Mid Willamette Valley Conference honors as a wide receiver, defensive back, and punter in 2014 and 2015.
