Gainwell attended Yazoo County High School while growing up in Yazoo City, Mississippi. For the Panthers, he started at quarterback for three seasons. He rushed for 1,292 yards and 20 touchdowns as a junior while also passing for 1,184 yards and nine scores.
Gainwell turned down invitations from Ole Miss and Tulane to play college football at Memphis during the summer before his senior year.

Gainwell switched positions during summer camp and participated in four games as a true freshman before opting to sit out the balance of the campaign. He had six receptions for 52 yards and six carries for 91 yards and a touchdown towards the end of the season.
Gainwell was selected in the fifth round (150th overall) by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2021 NFL Draft.
