Bregman’s contract was acquired by the Astros from the Grizzlies on July 25, 2016, and he was then added to their 25-man roster.

On that same day against the New York Yankees, he made his major league debut at third base. He made his Major League debut as the first position player selected in the 2015 Draft.

The Astros pushed him up to second in the batting order after he went hitless in his first 17 at-bats in the major league through five games in an effort to get him better pitches and show that they believed in him.

On July 31 against the Detroit Tigers, Bregman singled to center field for his first major league hit.

On August 16, he hit his first home run at Minute Maid Park, tying the game against the Cardinals in the first inning with a two-run shot to right field.

He played in 49 games and had a batting line of .264/.313/.478 with 8 home runs and 34 RBIs. He had the seventh-best slugging percentage of any Astros rookie in franchise history.

Bregman played 40 games at third base and four at shortstop while Carlos Correa, the 2015 AL Rookie of the Year, played shortstop.

Bregman, 22, began the 2017 baseball season as the youngest player for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic (WBC), which defeated Puerto Rico 8-0 in the championship game to claim its first WBC gold medal.

Due to WBC rules allowing all Jewish baseball players to play for the team, he had also been invited to play for Team Israel, which placed sixth at the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

He later admitted that looking back, “I probably should’ve” played for Team Israel “because I got [just] four at-bats” playing as a backup for Team USA.
