He played for the New York Yankees, Miami Marlins, Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, and Philadelphia Phillies in the past.
Phelps played basketball and baseball for Hazelwood West High School in Hazelwood, Missouri.
As a sophomore, he was named to the All-Conference Team as an outfielder and pitcher, as well as team captain and All-Conference, All-Metro Performer, and team captain.

Phelps was listed as Missouri’s sixth greatest prospect prior to the 2005 Major League Baseball draft, but he was not taken because of his strong commitment to attend the University of Notre Dame, where he pitched for the Fighting Irish baseball team.
Phelps pitched sparingly as a reliever as a freshman. He earned Big East All-Conference First Team, Academic All-District, and Academic All-American accolades as a sophomore while pitching in the starting rotation.
In his junior year, he struggled. He also pitched for the Mat-Su Miners of the Alaska Baseball League and the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League while in college.
