Matthew Thomas Ryan was born on May 17, 1985, in Exton, Pennsylvania, to Roman Catholics of Irish origin Michael and Bernice Ryan. He is the third of four children.
In Philadelphia, he attended the William Penn Charter School. He was a football player from a young age and performed well, earning awards such as ‘All-City First Team’ and second-team honors.
