Tellez was a Rawlings First Team High School All-American and a Baseball America First Team All-American in 2013.
The Blue Jays selected him in the 30th round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2013.
Tellez was a Midwest League All-Star in 2015, as well as an All-Prospect Team member of the Arizona Fall League (AFL) and an AFL Rising Star.
He was named an Eastern League All-Star the following year, as well as a MiLB.com Toronto Blue Jays Organization All-Star and a Baseball America Double-A All-Star.
He debuted in the top leagues in 2018, and he is the first player since 1913 to hit seven doubles in his first seven games.
He is the oldest child of Greg and Lori Tellez and was born in Sacramento, California. He is a Jew. Before he was born, his father said of him:
“We didn’t know what kind of sex he had and didn’t want to know, so we avoided calling him ‘Baby’ or ‘It.’
But he was so active in the womb, moving about all the time, that we came up with the nickname ‘Baby Rowdy,’ which stuck.
He’s now just known as ‘Rowdy,’ and that’s how everyone knows him.” Tellez’s father is of Mexican ancestry, and his paternal grandfather was a member of the Mexican Baseball League.
Elk Grove High School was Tellez’s alma mater. He was a Baseball America High School All-American in 2013, a Rawlings First Team All-American in 2013, and a Rawlings/Perfect Game All-Region First Team – California in 2013.

At the time of the draft, Baseball America ranked Tellez as the 59th best player available, but he was passed over for several rounds because he had accepted a scholarship to attend the University of Southern California.
