After attending Miami Dade College and graduating from MLB’s Puerto Rico Baseball Academy, Victor Caratini was picked in the second round of the 2013 amateur draft by the Atlanta Braves.
He began his professional career with the Appalachian League’s Danville Braves, where he hit .290 with 23 doubles in 49 games while primarily playing third base.
In 2014, Caratini was converted to catcher and assigned to the South Atlantic League’s Rome Braves, where he hit .279/.352/.406 in 87 games.
In 323 at-bats, he hit 18 doubles, 4 triples, and 5 home runs while scoring and driving in 42 runs.
He was moved to the Chicago Cubs on July 31st, in a transaction the Braves might have to back, for infielder/outfielder Emilio Bonifacio and pitcher James Russell, demonstrating how highly regarded he was as a prospect.
On June 28, 2017, Vctor was called up to Chicago when the Cubs sent backup catcher Miguel Montero for assignment after he made comments to the media insulting teammate Jake Arrieta. That day, he made his debut as a pinch-hitter against the Washington Nationals, going 0-for-1.
A month later, on July 30th, he hit his first major league home run against Zach Davies of the Milwaukee Brewers, breaking a 2-2 tie and leading the Cubs to a 3-2 victory at Miller Park.
Victor was sent back to the minors after the Cubs acquired veteran backstop Alex Avila in a trade with the Detroit Tigers on that day.
Willson Contreras went on the disabled list on August 9th with a hamstring strain, requiring the Cubs to recall Victor to serve as Avila’s backup pitcher.
