As a tight end with the National Football League’s New England Patriots, Matthew Ryan Sokol (born November 9, 1995) is an American football player. He was an undrafted free agent who started his career playing college football for Michigan State. The Los Angeles Chargers gave him his first roster position in 2020. The Patriots acquired Sokol in a 2022 signing.
On April 27, 2019, Sokol signed a contract as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers. He had previously participated in the 2019 NFL Draft. On August 31, 2019, he was released at the final roster cuts, and the next day he was added to the team’s practice squad. The practice squad rehired him on October 1 after he was reinstated after being fired on September 18. On October 9, 2019, he was discharged yet again.
On November 18, 2019, Sokol signed a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad.
Sokol joined the Detroit Lions on December 31, 2019, under a reserve/future contract. On September 5, 2020, he was released at the final roster cuts. On October 21, 2020, he was added to the team’s practice squad. Following three days, he was freed.
As of October 31, 2020, Sokol is still a member of the Los Angeles Chargers practice squad. For the team’s Week 16 game against the Denver Broncos, he was added to the active roster on December 26. He was then demoted to the practice squad following the game. As of January 1, 2021, he was added to the active roster.
Sokol’s release from the Chargers took place on August 31, 2021. On September 2, 2021, Sokol signed another contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad.
Sokol committed to the Detroit Lions on January 12, 2022, through the signing of a reserve/future contract. May 10, 2022, marked his release.
Sokol was acquired by the New England Patriots via waivers on May 11, 2022.
