McKivitz was born and raised in Belmont, Ohio, where he attended East Richland Christian High School until transferring to Union Local High School just before his sophomore year. McKivitz was named first-team All-Ohio as a senior.

He went to right tackle as a redshirt sophomore and started all 13 games, receiving honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference accolades. As a redshirt junior, McKivitz started all 12 of the Mountaineers’ games. In his redshirt senior season, he returned to left tackle and was selected first-team All-Big 12, co-Offensive Lineman of the Year, and a Second Team All-Big 12 selection.
