David was born on April 23, 1939, in Washington, D.C. in the United States of America. He died on April 29, 2022, in his home in Santa Monica, California.
David was born to Edwin and Jeanne Birney. He attended West High School in Cleveland. He played basketball, football and track which was led in school. When he finished high school, he enrolled at Dartmouth College and graduated with a B.A. degree in English Literature, and English Honors.
