He was a member of the Mississippi State University football team. In the 2020 NFL Draft, the Chiefs selected him as the 63rd overall pick.
Gay received his education at Starkville High School, which is located in Starkville, Mississippi. He took part in the 2017 U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. He is committed to playing college football for Mississippi State University.
Gay was a member of the Mississippi State football team from 2017 to 2019. In his first season as a junior, he appeared in only five games and was absent for eight others due to suspension.
