While playing offensive guard for Skyline High School in Dallas, Texas, Brewer was recognized as a member of the first team for All-District 9-6A. In the end, he decided to take up the invitation to play for Texas State under the direction of head coach Everett Withers, who had previously worked for the Tennessee Titans as a defensive backs coach.
Brewer participated in all twelve of Texas State’s games during his freshman year and started eleven of those games. Brewer started every game that the team played throughout the course of the next three seasons.
During his time at college, he was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference team each year. Pro Football Focus ranked Brewer as the top run blocker in the Sun Belt during his junior season, and they ranked him as the second-best pass blocker.
