Meet Bert Bell, Founders of Philadelphia Eagles
From 1946 until his death in 1959, De Benneville, also known as Bert Bell, was the commissioner of the National Football League (NFL).
He helped make the NFL the most financially viable sports enterprise and dominant sports attraction in the United States as commissioner, by introducing competitive parity into the league to increase the league’s commercial sustainability and boost its popularity (US). He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s charter class after he passed away.
Bell was a quarterback at the University of Pennsylvania and led his team to the Rose Bowl in 1917. He returned to Penn after serving in the US Army during World War I and later became an assistant football coach for the Quakers in the 1920s. He was a co-founder and co-owner of the Philadelphia Eagles and an assistant coach for the Temple Owls during the Great Depression.
