Banks attended El Cerrito High School in Alameda, California, where he grew up. Banks was a four-star prospect who chose Notre Dame over Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, UCLA, Baylor, Florida, Michigan, and Miami to play collegiate football.
Banks did not appear in any games as a true freshman, allowing him to extend his NCAA eligibility by one year. He started the final six games as a sophomore, appearing in all 13 of Notre Dame’s games. As a junior, he began every game for the Fighting Irish.
