Alex Jackson was a good hitting prospect when he came out of high school three years ago, and the Braves knew it.
Braves general manager John Coppolella stated, “He had a shot to go No. 1 in the Draft.” “He was highly regarded by everyone. Top picks aren’t chosen by chance.”
Jackson had also played catcher and outfield in high school, something the Braves were aware of. Catchers were in high demand for a Braves system that was already stocked with top-tier pitchers.
The Mariners selected Jackson with the sixth overall choice in the 2014 MLB Draft. The Braves ultimately acquired their guy two years later.
In November 2016, the Braves acquired Jackson in exchange for pitchers Max Povse and Rob Whalen.
“We’re putting a lot of emphasis on pitching and looking for impact power bats,” Coppolella said. “We didn’t know if he’d be interested in catching when we made the move.”
The Braves had sent Dave Trembley, director of player development, and Jonathan Schuerholz to meet with Jackson and find out what was going on.
Coppolella recalled, “We told him he had to desire to catch.” “We would have kept him in right field if he had stated that he didn’t want to catch. However, we informed him that we were running low on catches and that there was a chance.”
