Rivera began his coaching career with the Bears as a quality control coach in 1997. After two years as a linebackers coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, he returned to the Bears as their defensive coordinator in 2004.
The Bears made an appearance in Super Bowl XLI under his tenure. He worked as a linebackers coach with the San Diego Chargers for a year before becoming their defensive coordinator for three seasons.
Rivera has three brothers: Steven, Michael, and John, who are all Catholic. He married Stephanie (née Tamayo) in 1984, after meeting her while at Cal.
Stephanie, a Filipino American, played point guard for the California Golden Bears women’s basketball team in the early 1980s and later became a coach in the sport, most notably as an assistant coach for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics in 2000. Christopher and Courtney, the couple’s two children, are theirs.
