On May 1, he was brought up from his rehab assignment with the 51s. Mets fans took to Twitter and Facebook in mid-May to vent their displeasure with Collins’ decision to rest Lagares after he returned from the injured list.
He had been benched four times in five games as of May 16th. After Lagares was benched, Mets fans initiated a campaign dubbed #FreeLagares to show their displeasure.
However, despite Lagares’ struggles after returning from the disabled list, his defensive and clutch-hitting abilities were cited as justifications for his inclusion in the team.
His right intercostal strain landed him on the disabled list once more on June 2. For the first time since Lagares’ return, Wilmer Flores was sent down to the 51s on June 26 to make room for him.
He was forced to miss the rest of the season on September 23 after suffering a sprained elbow. His average went from.242 to.281 by the end of the season, an improvement of approximately 40 points.
This season, Lagares played 116 games in the majors, hitting 281, with four home runs, 47 RBIs, 20 walks, and 46 runs batted in.
He also walked 20 times and struck out 87 times. A Gold Glove Award was presented to him on November 4th, and he was ecstatic.
Outfielder Tommie Agee (1970) and Carlos Beltrán (1980) were the other two players to win a Gold Glove with the team (2006-08).
6Furthermore, he was awarded the Fielding Bible Award for being the National League’s greatest defensive center fielder in terms of statistics.
