Lionel Richie attended Joliet Township High School, East Campus in Joliet, Illinois, after which he earned a tennis scholarship at Tuskegee Institute where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics in the 1960s.
In 1968, he became part of the Commodore’s music band where he was a singer and saxophonist. The Commodores signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records in 1968 for one record before moving on to Motown Records.
The Commodores then became established as a popular soul group. Lionel gradually began writing romantic songs and sang more romantic, easy-listening ballads. Some of his songs include “Easy”, “Three Times a Lady”, “Still”, and the breakup ballad “Sail On”.
Before Lionel got into music, he had intentions of going to study divinity to become a priest in the Episcopal Church where he was baptised, but he felt he was not a priest material which made him change his mind and pursue music.
