Sergei Sukharev and his troops were ambushed and killed by Ukrainian Forces during a battlefield massacre.
According to the account, his subordinate, Major Sergei Krylov, was also assassinated. They were among a number of members of Russia’s “famous” Kostroma regiment, regarded as one of the country’s most elite combat troops, who were murdered.
Attributed to Ukrinform, this is according to the Center for Strategic Communication and Information Security, which cites Anatoliy Shtefan, a military officer and blogger.

Sukharev’s unit is known to have fought against Ukraine outside of Ilovaisk in Donbas in 2014, as well as in both Chechen conflicts and the Russian-Georgian war of 2008,” according to the Center.
