John Thomas Hatch is a pitcher who hails from the United States and presently competes in Major League Baseball for the Toronto Blue Jays. Hatch is a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
During his time in college, he pitched for the Oklahoma State Cowboys, and in 2016, the Big 12 Conference recognized him as the league’s best pitcher.
Hatch did not be picked in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2013, despite being a high school senior. In 2015, he was sidelined due to a sprained ulnar collateral ligament, which meant that he was unable to throw.
The Chicago Cubs took a chance on Hatch and picked him up in the third round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft. In 2017, he made his debut as a professional baseball player with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League. Prior to that, he had played amateur baseball.
In 2018, he made a total of 27 starts on the mound across Tennessee and New Hampshire and finished with a record of 6–13 and a 4.12 earned run average (ERA).
The Toronto Blue Jays came to the decision that it would be beneficial to have Hatch on their 40-man roster following the completion of the 2019 season.
On April 22, 2021, it was determined that Hatch had inflammation in his right elbow, and as a result, he was placed on the disabled list for a period of sixty days the very same day.
On July 6, he was taken off the disabled list and inserted back into the lineup after recovering from his injury.
