Who Shot Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh?
Over the past few months, there’s been unending friction between Israeli forces and Palestinian settlements. There have been crossfires and loss of lives from both parties alike. A female Al Jazeera reporter, Shireen was shot and killed during a raid on a refugee camp this morning. Qatar and Al Jazeera, the agency she worked with, have accused Israeli security forces of ‘shooting her in the face’ even though she wore a press vest. The Israeli Prime Minister also claims it is likely she died in the hands of Palestinian forces.
Shireen Abu Akleh was a well-known Palestinian television personality with American citizenship, she was killed during a raid in the occupied West Bank town of Jenin on early Wednesday 11th May, during a refugee camp raid. Shireen (51) was born in Jerusalem.
‘I turned and found Shireen on the ground in the first few seconds. I found Shatha [Hanaysheh] shielding herself by a tree and screaming with the shooting, and we were telling each other we were being shot at,’ Journalist Mujahed Al-Saadi, who accompanied Abu Akleh said.
The body of the slain Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh, 51, lay on the ground while her colleague, Shatha Hanaysheh, covered her mouth in shock as the firing continued. Luckily, a brave young male resident was able to attend to Shireen’s body amidst the crossfire.
The troops shot at other journalists too. Some however were able to escort the body of veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was shot dead by Israelis.
Currently, no faction has claimed responsibility for the sad, tragic act. Shireen was shot by troops as she covered a raid on the West Bank’s Jenn refugee camp this morning.
