Although the New York Giants defeated the Green Bay Packers with a score of 27–22, one of their players was reportedly detained abroad. According to an NFL Media story on Tuesday, Giants punter Jamie Gillan stayed in London after the game because of some passport complications. Gillan was back with the Giants on Thursday at the team facility, according to ESPN, in preparation for a Week 6 game against the Baltimore Ravens.
According to reports, Gillan, also known as “The Scottish Hammer,” traveled to the United States with his father on a NATO visa.
When Gillan arrived in the NFL, that status wasn’t changed to a work visa. This issue apparently slipped through the cracks when Gillan made his trip to London with the team, and U.S.diplomats reportedly had to step in to rectify the situation with a new passport for the punter.
Out of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Gillan originally entered the league undrafted in 2019. Prior to joining the Giants, he played three seasons with the Cleveland Browns and a brief time on the practice squad of the Buffalo Bills.
In his five games this season, he has punted for an average of a career-high 51 yards, with a long of 69. In the London game against the Packers, he had two punts with an average distance of 50 yards. This Sunday’s game between the Giants and the Baltimore Ravens is scheduled.
