Yan Gomes happens to be one of the professional baseball catchers with the Chicago Cubs baseball team. He played baseball non professionally when he attended Miami Southridge High School in Miami, Florida.
He completed high school and enrolled at the University of Tennessee where he continued to play collegiate baseball for the Tennessee Volunteers in the Southeastern Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Division.
Yan is also known to have played collegiate summer baseball for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2007 whiles still in college. The Boston Red Sox team drafted him in the 39th round of the 2008 MLB draft but he did not sign with them.
Yan left the University of Tennessee for Barry University in 2008. There, he played college baseball for the Barry Buccaneers in the Sunshine State Conference.
In 2009, the Toronto Blue Jays drafted him in the tenth round of the 2009 MLB Draft. He signed with the Jays this time and made his professional debut playing with the Gulf Coast Blue Jays of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League.
He was later promoted to the Auburn Doubledays of the Class A-Short Season New York–Pennsylvania League that season and he made his MLB debut in May 2012 for the Jays. Yan and the Chicago Cubs agreed on a two-year contract with a club option for the 2024 season in December 2021.
