You’d be forgiven if you missed Yennsy Diaz’s MLB debut. The Blue Jays used a slew of different pitchers to get through the 2019 season.
He made his maiden start at the age of 22, and it didn’t go well, as he walked four of the seven batters he faced, surrendering two runs and recording only two outs.
We didn’t see him again when he was promptly returned to the minor leagues.
Diaz is only 23 years old, and despite his first big league appearance being a fiasco, he should have a bright future ahead of him.
He was signed as an international free agent by the Blue Jays in 2014 at the age of 18 and has worked his way up through the minor league system.
Diaz had 26 appearances (24 starts) in Double-A last season after dividing the 2018 season between Low and High-A.
In New Hampshire, he was mainly successful. Over 144.1 innings pitched at that level, the right-hander had a 3.74 ERA and 1.233 WHIP.
Diaz is a powerful thrower who, if he can maximize the potential of his fastball, might carve himself a successful MLB career.
Diaz’s fastball averaged 96.4 mph and was utilized two-thirds of the time (66.7 percent) during his one appearance with the Blue Jays, according to Baseball Savant.
Even if things didn’t go as planned, that’s a good statistic, and Baseball Savant likes his fastball potential, ranking it a 60.
Diaz, though, did not strike out nearly as many batters as one might anticipate from a pitcher of this caliber.
