Tennis player Zhang Shuai was born in China on January 21, 1989. On November 14, 2016, she reached a career-high singles ranking of number 23, and on June 13, 2002, she reached a career-high doubles ranking of number 3.
Twenty-six singles titles have been won by Zhang, including three on the WTA Tour (at the WTA Lyon Open in 2022 and the Guangzhou International Women’s Open in 2013 and 2017), 21 on the ITF Circuit, and two in WTA 125K series contests.
In total, she has won 21 double titles, 12 of them on the WTA. She won the US Open in 2021 and the Australian Open in 2019 with Samantha Stosu.
Zhang won her first singles victory at a Grand Slam match at the 2016 Australian Open, as she advanced to the quarterfinals as a qualifier by defeating world No. 2 Simona Halep.
Zhang was contemplating retirement at the time since she had lost every single one of her main-draw Grand Slam matches up to that moment, dating back to the 2008 US Open.
Additionally, she advanced to the 2019 Wimbledon Championships quarterfinals. Zhang is one of only five Chinese tennis players to have advanced to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam singles competition, joining Li Na, Zheng Jie, Peng Shuai, and Wang Qiang.
