Patrick Leahy, a Democrat, is now serving his ninth term in office. Representative Don Young became the oldest member of Congress after his passing in March 2022.
In addition, Leahy is the last surviving member of the Senate’s “Watergate Babies”, which happens to be Democrats who were first elected to Congress in the wave election of 1974 that took place in the wake of President Richard Nixon’s resignation over the Watergate crisis.
As of 2022, Leahy is one of three Congressmen who served during the Gerald Ford administration[a] and one of five who did so during the Jimmy Carter administration.
Leahy, the only Democrat ever elected to the U.S. Senate from Vermont, is the dean of his state’s congressional delegation and has served as a senator for the longest period in Vermont. He served as the Judiciary and Agriculture committees’ previous chairman.
From 2017 to 2021, he was the Appropriations Committee’s ranking member; he was elected chairman in 2021. Leahy and former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle were targeted in the anthrax attacks of 2001, which claimed the lives of five people. He presided over Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial as the trial’s chief justice, making him the first senator to do so.
Leahy declared that he would not run for reelection 2022 in November 2021.
