Jane Furneaux Garrett was a prominent politician in her home country of Australia. From 2010 to 2018, she served as the Labor Party member for Brunswick in the Victorian Legislative Assembly.
In December 2011, she was sworn into her current position as the Victorian Legislative Council representative for Eastern Victoria Vice President.
Garrett held the position of shadow cabinet secretary in the state government before the election in 2014.
Garrett was given the positions of Minister for Emergency Services and Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gaming, and Liquor Regulation in the newly elected Labor administration led by Andrews after he successfully defended his seat in the 2014 election.
The Country Fire Authority (CFA), the United Firefighters Union, and the Victorian government were involved in a dispute regarding an enterprise bargaining agreement on the day that Garrett resigned from the Andrews Ministry on June 9, 2016. Garrett’s resignation came after the conflict.

In a post that she made on Facebook in November of 2016, Garrett revealed that she had recently recovered from a breast cancer operation that had been a success and that she would be taking a leave of absence from the legislature for a period of four months in order to attend treatment and recover.
On September 27, 2017, Garrett made the announcement that she would not be running for the seat of Brunswick in the upcoming state election and instead would seek preselection for the seat of Western Metropolitan Region on the Victorian Legislative Council.
Ingrid Stitt, the branch secretary of the Australian Services Union, was supported by the left-wing faction of Labor, which led to the failure of her attempt to be preselected.
Despite this, she was eventually chosen to lead the Labor ticket in the Eastern Victoria Region.
