Judy Lynn Tenuta was an American comedian, actor, and comedic musician. She was born on November 7, 1949, and passed away on October 6, 2022.
She was famous for her outrageous and outspoken image of “The Love Goddess,” which combined insult comedy, observational humor, self-promotion, and raunchy antics onstage.
Tenuta developed a dedicated fan base among a certain subset of the population, namely members of the LGBTQ community.
Tenuta was born in Oak Park, Illinois, as one of nine children of a Polish mother and an Italian father. Her family practiced Roman Catholicism and she was raised in the faith.
She received her high school diploma from Immaculate Heart of Mary in Westchester, Illinois, and then continued her education at the University of Illinois in Chicago.
It was her experience in an improv comedy class with The Second City sparked her interest in the comedy genre.
Tenuta began her career as a comedian in 1970s on the Chicago comedy circuit. For her debut performance, she portrayed the Virgin Mary while dressed in a costume.
Later on, Tenuta relocated to New York City, where she hosted an episode of a comedy special on HBO alongside Ellen DeGeneres, Rita Rudner, and Paula Poundstone.
Tenuta released her memoir, Full Frontal Tenudity, on her experiences living in Hollywood by the middle of 1980s.
After that, she continued her career by performing on national tours for a number of years.
Cause of Death
Tenuta passed away from stage 4 ovarian cancer in Studio City, California, on October 6, 2022, at the age of 72.
