The Blue Jays needed some potential college arms going into Monday’s draft, and they ended up with one of the best.
Alek Manoah, a junior from West Virginia, was drafted by Toronto in the 11th round. “Manoah” is 6’6″ and throws fastballs in the mid-to upper-nineties with good movement, but his changeup is still a work in progress.
By the end of the season, the 21-year-old had vaulted upmost prospect lists by finishing 9-3 and earning a 1.85 ERA at West Virginia.
He was never drafted out of high school. To put him in the record books, the Florida-native concluded with 125 strikeouts, which surpassed the previous mark of 123 set by John Radosevich in 1964.
“Alek offers a unique pitch mix to the table,” Blue Jays Director of Amateur Scouting Steve Sanders stated immediately after he was selected.
‘It’s going to be three fastballs and a lot of strikes.'” As a major-league pitcher, we believe he has all the tools to succeed.
