Yes! Verdugo is of Mexican Descent.
He traces his ancestors back to Mexico. Joe his father, was born in the Mexican city of Hermosillo in the state of Sonora.
Many of Verdugo’s relatives still live there, and it’s just about a four-hour journey from his hometown of Tucson. Verdugo identifies as a Mexican-American with pride.
One of his best professional achievements, he believes, was representing Mexico in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.
He’s taking advantage of the fact that he’s now playing on the national stage in the MLB postseason, which also happens to occur during Hispanic Heritage Month.
Verdugo’s right elbow flares out toward the mound when at the plate, revealing a white elbow guard with the Mexican flag embroidered across the center.
Verdugo introduced the Boston fans to Vicente Fernández’s renowned song “Volver Volver” at Fenway Park.
The atmosphere at Fenway Park isn’t quite as celebratory as the one Verdugo recalls witnessing frequently at Dodger Stadium during his time with the Dodgers, but he believes it’s gaining traction.
It’s difficult for any athlete to win over the Red Sox faithful. Verdugo’s situation was even worse.
Verdugo has been viewed as the candidate to replace a superstar in Mookie Betts since his arrival in Boston in the Mookie Betts deal in February 2020, fair or not.
