He began his career with Oldham Athletic and Hibernian after being born in Bury, Lancashire, England, but is best known for his time spent playing for Rangers in the 1990s when he gained the moniker “The Goalie.”

Goram represented Scotland in 43 international games and was chosen for their teams at the UEFA Euro 1992 and UEFA Euro 1996 tournaments, as well as the 1986 and 1990 World Cups.

Goram played for numerous teams after his time with the Rangers, although his most notable stops were Motherwell and a brief loan at Manchester United. Goram played cricket for Scotland as well.

He continued on to work as a goalkeeping instructor at many Scottish clubs after his playing career ended.

West Bromwich Albion was where Goram started his career, but when he was a teenager, they released him.

Later, in 1981, he moved to England and joined Oldham Athletic, where he lasted almost seven years and made 195 league games.

He was chosen for the PFA Team of the Year for the English Second Division in 1986–1987 due to his performances.

He made the £325,000 transfer to Hibernian in 1987, where his father had previously played goalkeeper for a while. On October 10, 1987, he made his Hibs debut, keeping a clean sheet in a 4-0 victory over Dunfermline Athletic.

He was a success at Hibs and served as club captain for the bulk of his time there. In 1988, he pulled off the remarkable feat of scoring a goal against Morton in a Premier Division game with a big kick out.

In a penalty shootout that followed a 0-0 draw in a League Cup match between Hibernian and Clydebank in August 1989, Hibs prevailed 5-3.

During his tenure at Easter Road, Goram furthered his reputation. In one save against RFC Liège in a European match, Goram twisted in midair to deflect a header from Angelo Nijskens for a corner kick.
