Angela Rayner Biography
In Stockport, Greater Manchester, Rayner was born on 28 March 1980. She attended Stockport’s Avondale School, but left at the age of 16 due to pregnancy, and left without obtaining any qualifications. She later studied part-time at Stockport College, where she gained an NVQ Level 2 in social care while also learning British Sign Language.
Rayner worked as a care worker for the Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council after graduating from college for several years. Additionally, during this time period, she was elected to represent Unison as a trade unionist for the union.
Convenor of Unison North West, she became the union’s highest-ranking official in the region at the time. In 2012, The Guardian published a comprehensive profile of Rayner as part of an article about the working life of a trade union officer.
After serving as the Duchy of Lancaster’s shadow chancellor, shadow cabinet minister, and shadow secretary of state for the future of work from 2021 to 2020, Rayner is now the Labour Party’s deputy leader and deputy leader.
Since 2015, she has served as the MP for Ashton-under-Lyne. She considers herself a socialist and a member of Labour’s “soft left” on the ideological spectrum.
