Griner went to Houston’s Nimitz High School. She lettered in basketball all four years of high school and also played varsity volleyball as a freshman.
Griner began practicing with the guys’ basketball team in her sophomore year and worked with a Nimitz football coach to improve her leg strength in anticipation of learning to dunk in her junior year.
A YouTube video of her dunks was watched over 2.7 million times during her junior season, leading to a meeting with Shaquille O’Neal.
Griner led the Nimitz Cougars to the Texas 5A girls basketball state championship game in her senior year, when they were defeated 52–43 by Mansfield Summit High School.
As a senior, Griner slammed the ball 52 times in 32 games, including a single-game record of seven dunks against Aldine High School. Brittney Griner Day was announced by Houston mayor Bill White on May 7, 2009.
On November 11, 2008, she had the most ever recorded by a female in a high school game in the United States, with 25 blocks against Houston Alief Hastings.
She set a single-season record with 318 blocks in the 2008–09 season.
Griner was chosen a WBCA All-American and played in the 2009 WBCA High School All-America Game, scoring 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds to lead the team.
