Schmidt was a graduate of Acworth’s Allatoona High School. He didn’t get selected out of high school and went on to play collegiate baseball for the Gamecocks at the University of South Carolina.
Schmidt had 18 appearances and 10 starts as a freshman, posting a 2–2 mark with a 4.81 ERA and 55 strikeouts. In 2016, as a sophomore, he became South Carolina’s ace.
He went 9–5 with a 3.40 ERA with 129 strikeouts in 18 appearances, 17 of which he started. Schmidt finished his junior year as the team’s top starter. In April of this year, he had Tommy John surgery.
Schmidt was taken in the first round of the 2017 MLB draft by the New York Yankees with the 16th overall pick. Schmidt signed a $2,184,300 signing bonus with the Yankees on June 24, 2017. Due to a surgery, he did not play in 2017.
In 2018, he made his professional debut with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League’s GCL Yankees and the Class A-Short Season New York-Penn League’s Staten Island Yankees.
