Following injury-ravaged seasons in 2019 and 2020, Kluber was 5-3 with a 3.83 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 82 strikeouts in 80 innings for the Yankees last year.
Former Cleveland ace and three-time All-Star who was also a two-time Cy Young Award winner (and placed third in the vote twice) and a three-time Cy Young Award nominee.
As of late, he seemed to be getting back into the swing of things. In his five starts from April 27 to May 19, Kluber had a 1.78 ERA and a 4-0 record with a no-hitter.
However, he was forced to sit out the rest of the season with a shoulder injury and didn’t return until August 30. Over the course of his last six outings, he has an earned run average of 5.40.
Similarly to the Rays’ strategy, they’ll probably deploy Kluber in shorter starts than usual in order to get the most out of him and then rely on their bullpen to take over the rest of the game. He becomes a midseason trade candidate regardless of if he’s throwing well on a one-year contract.
