Daniel was born in Virginia and he began his amateur career playing for his high school baseball team, that is the Douglas S. Freeman High School in Virginia.After high school, he played college baseball for the Virginia Cavaliers baseball team at the University of Virginia. During his freshman year at college, he played in 13 games.
In 2017, he pitched for the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod League and he was named a league all-star.The Kansas City Royals team selected him as the 34th overall pick in the 2018 MLB draft and he signed with them in June 2018 for a $1.7 million signing bonus.
