The New York Yankees said that they were unable to strike an agreement with Linden’s Aaron Judge before his deadline to sign a long-term contract by opening day and that they plan to restart discussions after the season.
The Yankees’ general manager, Brian Cashman, said on Friday that the team has offered Judge an eight-year contract for up to $234.5 million. After the World Series, the outfielder will be available for free agency.
“We’re glad he’s wearing pinstripes. “We are excited to have him lead the club this year,” Cashman added. “Of course, we’ll re-engage with him when the occasion arises afterward.”
According to Cashman, the Yankees offered him a deal for $30.5 million per year from 2023 through 2029, with his 2022 pay being either the $17 million given by the organization in arbitration or the $21 million demanded by Judge. “We couldn’t agree at this point,” Cashman added.
Judge, a three-time All-Star, will be 30 on April 26. Last season, he led the Yankees with a.287 batting average, 39 home runs, and 98 RBIs.
Judge stated before the team’s season opener against Boston on Friday that he will address the problem after the game.
