Eddie Butler was a Welsh journalist, sports commentator, and Welsh rugby union player, who won 16 caps for the Wales team between 1980 and 1984 and scored 2 tries.
Butler was conceived on May 8, 1957. He received his education at Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge and Monmouth School.
Butler, who primarily played as a number eight, won the Cambridge Blues in 1976, 1977, and 1978 and led Wales six times as its captain.
Between 1982 and 1985, he led the Pontypool RFC team as captain, succeeding Jeff Squire. He was selected for both the British Lions and the Barbarians.
Following his retirement from the sport, Butler began writing a weekly column for The Observer Sport’s Rugby Union section in 1991. He also contributed to The Guardian and provided commentary for the BBC alongside former England hooker Brian Moore.
When it was revealed that Butler had authored Austin Healey’s weekly column when Healey was on tour with the British and Irish Lions rugby team in Australia in 2001, he attracted some notice.
