Tennis player from Belgium Elise Mertens is ranked number one in the world in doubles. She is a top 15 player in both doubles and singles and reached her highest ranking of No. 12 on November 26, 2018. On May 10, 2021, she attained the top position in the women’s doubles rankings for the first time.

She made her WTA Tour debut with Nastja Kolar in the main draw of the doubles event at the 2015 Copa Colsanitas. She and An-Sophie Mesta won the Auckland Open in 2016 to earn their first WTA doubles triumph. In January 2017, Mertens won the Hobart International championship by defeating No. 3 seed Monica Niculescu.

When Mertens won back-to-back titles in Hobart to start the 2018 season, she became the first female to do so. She successfully defended her championship from the previous year by defeating Mihaela Buzărnescu in the final match.

She won the doubles championship with Demi Schuurs. At the 2022 Australian Open, she and partner Veronika Kudermetova advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual champions Barbora Krejková and Katerina Siniaková. They were seeded third in doubles. To win their sixteenth doubles championship, she and Kudermetova overcame Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok in Dubai.

She progressed to the third round of doubles with Kudermetova and the fourth round of singles at the 2022 French Open before being defeated in straight sets by Coco Gauff for the second time in this Major. She subsequently recovered her position as the top doubles player when the competition ended on June 6, 2022.
