Around 4 a.m. on Friday, Eliza Fletcher was out for a jog in a neighborhood close to the University of Memphis when, according to authorities, she was pursued and forced into a black SUV. According to an affidavit obtained by CNN, authorities discovered security footage of the area that shows a black GMC Terrain passing by the woman after her husband reported her missing and someone spotted her phone on a street.
According to the video used in the affidavit, a male was then seen getting out of the SUV, approaching her “aggressively,” and shoving her into the passenger seat.The affidavit claims that the SUV lingered in a parking lot with both people inside for almost four minutes before driving away.
The GMC Terrain was discovered by police over the weekend in a parking lot close to Cleotha Abston’s home in southeast Memphis, according to the affidavit. Abston was then detained and charged. He was accused of tampering with evidence and particularly aggravating kidnapping. According to jail records, Abston, 38, is being held in the Shelby County Jail on a $500,000 bond and is due in court on Tuesday.
It’s unknown if he has legal representation. Police reported that Fletcher was last seen wearing a pink jogging top and purple running shorts. Police described her as White, 5 feet 6 inches tall, with brown hair and green eyes. She has a 137-pound weight. According to a tweet from St. Mary’s Episcopal School, she teaches junior kindergarten there.
