Is Edward Olivares Good?
After being acquired in the Trevor Rosenthal deal, the former Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres prospect made his Royals debut in 2020.
In 31 MLB games that year, Olivares hit .240/.267/.375 with three home runs for two clubs. His power was and still is, even as a non-prospect today. His calling card as a prospect, as he hit 18 home runs for the Padres’ Double-A club the year before.
In addition to Olivares’ MLB statistics this season, we must also consider what he accomplished in Triple-A. For the Omaha Storm Chasers, he’s too talented.
The outfielder hit .313/.397/.559 with a .956 OPS and 15 home runs in 66 games with the Royals’ highest level of minor league affiliates.
His 155 wRC+ was in the top ten among all upper-level minor league players with at least 250 plate appearances. Olivares is obviously too advanced for Triple-A pitching.
Olivares batted just.238 in 39 games with the Royals this season, and his.291 on-base percentage was simply not good enough.
His .168 ISO and .406 SLG may be greater for a guy who is known for his raw power. Outside of a few multi-game streaks when he looked good, Olivares’ strikeout percentage of 17.1 percent was one of the few bright spots of his 2021 season.
