The late Louise Bennett-Coverley, better known as “Miss Lou,” was a cultural hero in Jamaica. She was 86 years old at the time of her death.
Miss Lou, a resident of Toronto, Canada, collapsed at home early on the morning of July 26 and was pronounced dead at Scarborough Grace Hospital.
Miss Lou, who was born in Kingston on September 7th, 1919, is widely regarded as the best folklorist, poet, performer, and comic in Jamaica.
She was a giant in the cultural world because of the role she played in popularizing the Jamaican patois language through her writing.
Her radio shows, such as “Laugh with Louise,” “Miss Lou’s Views,” and “The Lou and Ranny Show,” were hugely successful, and her television show, “Ring Ding,” was a hit with kids all throughout Jamaica.
How did Louise Bennett-Coverley Died?
Bennett spent her final ten years of life in the Canadian city of Scarborough.
She had a heart attack at home on July 27th, 2006, and was pronounced dead at Scarborough Grace Hospital that same day.
Her remains were taken to Jamaica and displayed at the National Arena on August 7 and 8, 2006, following a funeral service conducted in Toronto on August 3.
On August 9, 2006, her funeral was held at the Coke Methodist Church on East Parade in Kingston, and she was buried at the National Heroes Park’s cultural icons area.
