Hernández signed a two-year, $14 million contract with the Boston Red Sox on February 2, 2021. He started the season as Boston’s starting center fielder and also saw action at second base.
With a right hamstring strain, Hernández was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 7. On a rehab assignment, he played for the Worcester Red Sox on May 17.
In the game, he hit two home runs, including the first grand slam in team history. The next day, Hernández was back in Boston’s lineup.
After hitting .400 with nine RBIs from July 19–25, he was named AL Player of the Week. Due to a COVID-related injury, Hernández missed a number of games from late August to early September.
