The word “virgin” is used 9 times throughout Hocus Pocus, it is a cult favorite, and Hocus Pocus is a campy, (mainly) family-friendly Halloween film. Even before having children, our family has been watching it for years. But I’m never sure if Hocus Pocus is great just because of how awful it is, or if it’s that fantastic.
Teenagers in the 1990s learned what a virgin is thanks to the movie Hocus Pocus. Hocus Pocus at the very least taught them the significance of knowing which of your buddies is a virgin.
Being a virgin makes you the most likely candidate to resurrect witches, after all. In addition, virgins are more likely to survive a slasher film from the 1980s or 1990s, so it’s not entirely horrible, I suppose.
However, there is unmistakably a hint that being a virgin is a bad thing in Hocus Pocus. One of the more entertaining, if awkward, scenes in the film is a biker who is trick-or-treating as a police officer. When witches are pursuing them, the children turn to him for assistance. Dani also notes that Max is a virgin in addition to the fact that they broke into Sander’s home.
The biker is genuinely shocked to learn that Max is still a virgin, and he expresses this genuine surprise to Max. “Look, I’ll get that tattooed on my forehead, OK?” Max responds.
Also, observe Allison’s reticence on her virginity throughout the entire film. In fact, if you look closely, Allison scoffs, looks away, and rolls her eyes when Max asks if she wants to light the Black Flame Candle.
