Taylor was born in Norman, Oklahoma, on May 10, 1983. Norman High School was his high school football team. Despite achieving several records throughout his time at Norman High School, he was only recruited by a few universities.
He began his career with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in 2002, then transferred to Butler Community College in Kansas. Taylor received second-team NJCAA All-American honors after leading Butler to the NJCAA Championship game.
Zac Taylor went to Nebraska in 2005 and had a rocky start, completing 39 of 89 throws for 399 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions in his first three games.
He did, however, progress significantly in the next season compared to the prior year. He threw for 287 yards on 22 of 33 attempts with three touchdowns and one interception in the season opener against Louisiana Tech.
