Oakland Athletics manager, Robert Paul Melvin is the manager of the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball. He is a former professional baseball player and coach. A respective three times in his career, he has been awarded Manager of the Year.
Throughout a 10-year time at the club from 1985 to 1994, he was selected in the first round (2nd selection) by the Detroit Tigers in the second round of the 1981 draft.
Melvin was elected National League Manager of the Year in 2007 and American League Manager of the Year in 2012 (becoming only the sixth manager in history to win both leagues) and 2018. He also won a 3-time managerial award.
Melvin and his wife, Kelley, live in Berkeley, California, and Greenwich Village, New York City. Melvin met Kelley when he was 21 years old in 1982. Alexi (born December 21, 1988), their only child, is an actor, writer, and filmmaker. Melvin and his family are highly involved with the Pediatric Diabetes Research Foundation; Alexi was treated with juvenile diabetes when he was just a few years old.
