He had committed to play baseball for the Texas A&M Aggies in college but instead elected to sign with the Padres.
Following his contract, Potts split 2016 between the Arizona League Padres and the Tri-City Dust Devils, batting .280 with one home run and 27 RBIs in 59 games with both teams.
He batted .253 with 20 home runs, 69 RBIs, and a .731 OPS in 125 games with the Fort Wayne TinCaps in 2017, and .260/.335/.455 with 19 home runs and 63 RBIs in 128 games with the Lake Elsinore Storm (winning California League All-Star honors) and the San Antonio Missions in 2018.
In 107 games with the Amarillo Sod Poodles in 2019, he hit.227/.290/.406 with 16 home runs and 59 RBIs. Potts played in the Arizona Fall League for the Peoria Javelinas after the 2019 season.
Potts and outfielder Jeisson Rosario were traded to the Boston Red Sox for Mitch Moreland on August 30, 2020.
