According to reports, the Toronto Blue Jays have bolstered their starting rotation for 2020. The Jays have agreed to a four-year, $80 million agreement with free agency pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The seasoned left-handed pitcher had spent his whole career with the Dodgers, having joined the team in 2013.
He’s going off a relatively successful 2019 season in which he led the majors with a 2.32 ERA and a 179 ERA+ while striking out 168 batters and walking only 24 in 182 2/3 innings.
Before going to MLB, Ryu spent seven seasons in Korea with the Hanwha Eagles.
Ryu was ranked as the No. 8 available free agent by CBS Sports entering into the offseason, and our own R.J. Anderson praised him once he reached the market following a season in which he placed second in the National League Cy Young voting and was a front-runner for much of the year.
Ryu started the 2020 season at the top of the Blue Jays rotation, ahead of Chase Anderson and Tanner Roark, who signed a two-year, $24 million deal with the team earlier this offseason.
Shun Yamaguchi, a veteran Japanese righty, was also signed to a two-year deal with Toronto. At the moment, here’s their rotation depth chart:
How Much Does Hyun Jin Ryu Make?
