Teresa Berganza, a legendary mezzo-soprano, has died. She was 89.
Berganza began her musical career at the Madrid Conservatory, where she studied piano (as well as cello and organ, among other instruments) and voice, winning first place for singing in 1954.
She made her concert debut a year later.
Berganza made her opera debut in “Cos Fan Tutte” at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in 1957, and she also made her debut at Teatro alla Scala.
She went on to appear at Glyndebourne, the Dallas Opera, the Royal Opera House, and the Metropolitan Opera, alongside Maria Callas in “Medea.”
She made her debut at the Vienna State Opera in Herbert von Karajan’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” in 1959.
In 2008, she stepped off from the stage.
Berganza portfolio would mostly consist of Italian opera, Spanish song, and zarzuela.
She received the Prince of Asturias Award in 1991, as well as the Grand Prix Rossini, the 2018 International Opera Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award, and Spain’s Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts.
Berganza was also the first woman to be admitted to San Fernando’s Real Academia de Bellas Artes. She’ll also be known as Madrid’s “Hija Predilecta.”

He was well recognized for his work with Teresa Berganza, a mezzo-soprano with whom he was married from 1957 until 1977. The couple performed and recorded together on a regular basis.
